Addiction to alcohol can hold people back from reaching many great millstones and that’s why it’s so important to address this issue promptly. Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in the United States in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, is a voluntary fellowship of men and women who were formerly addicted to alcohol. Alcoholics Anonymous Ohio, a huge community containing thousands of members, is organized locally and only accepts contributions that come from members or people attending the meetings. AA meetings in Shadyside help alcohol users see and understand that many people share the struggle of alcoholism. These meetings reach out to individuals that are addicted to alcohol and provide them with a positive environment where they can make stable relationships and have a fresh start. They also follow the 12 step approach, a spiritual guideline that educates members on how to look after themselves and avoid relapse. The success of treatment is dependent on what goal a member sets while first joining the community. An individual may decide to simply decrease his or her alcohol intake while another decides to totally quit it. Even though these two individuals would take different roads, they’d receive equal amount of guidance and acceptance in the AA to community during their difficult journey. Whatever the case, the AA community has shown many positive results and is responsible for many who became and still are sober.
