Types of AA Meetings

Big Book: The Big Book is a collection of real stories about people who successfully managed alcohol use disorder. AA clients in New Mexico use the Big Book for inspiration.

Cross Talk Permitted: Cross talk refers to speech in AA meetings that are directed toward a specific member, rather than the group, and is generally critical. Crosstalk is generally not permitted in AA because it is considered disruptive and can undermine the unity of the group. However, some AA chapters allow cross talk in discussions.

Digital Basket: AA chapters may have a digital basket, which is a virtual collections plate for members to donate funds to pay for the chapter’s expenses. The virtual basket may accept various online payment services, such as PayPal, Google Pay, Stripe, and Venmo.

Discussion: In New Mexico, AA discussion meetings are conversational in nature. Leaders will choose a central theme to discuss, often pulling inspiration from an AA text, such as As Bill Sees It. They’ll share their personal insights first, then allow others to do the same.

Literature: Literature-guided AA meetings in New Mexico are support group meetings for people who are impacted by alcohol addiction, including those suffering from alcoholism and those who have loved ones addicted to alcohol. These peer meetings use a 12-step recovery program and study AA literature such as the Big Book of AA, AA workbooks, and other writings by AA founders and leaders.

Newcomer: In New Mexico, AA newcomer meetings help individuals understand how AA works and what to expect from the 12 step recovery model. These meetings are informative in nature and will usually include an overview of the first three steps in the program.

Open: In New Mexico, open AA meetings are available to anyone from the public who wants to attend. Members can share their stories and alcohol addiction recovery journeys, offering a look into how the program works and what the 12 step recovery model includes. Alcoholics and nonalcoholics are welcome.
