Waldo, Wisconsin AA Meetings

Waldo is a small village situated along the Onion River in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Many people in addiction recovery prefer finding local meetings in their community, such as AA meetings in Waldo. If you are new to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program, you may have many questions. One topic that is confusing to some newcomers is the spiritual nature of the program.

Beginners who have not yet started participating in AA meetings Wisconsin, may wonder if the program is religious. Newcomers may stay away from AA because they have heard it is a religious program. This belief couldn’t be further from the truth. Although the 12 Steps of AA are considered a spiritual set of principles, AA is not affiliated with any type of religious organization. In AA the word spiritual has a unique meaning, and members are encouraged to find their own meaning of the word. AA group members explore a power greater than themselves (a higher power). Step 2 of the 12 Steps is “Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” This “power” is interchangeable with the term “higher power.” For some recovering people, their higher power is a deity (such as God). But, for atheists, agnostics, or those who are non-religious, the higher power is often their AA group.

In AA, it’s essential to separate the words “spiritual” and “religious.” Many AA sponsors encourage newcomers to avoid trying to define these complex concepts (such as spiritual and religious) and focusing on doing the action steps (such as working the 12 Steps), then observing the results of working the Steps.
