Types of AA Meetings

Child-Friendly: Child-friendly AA meetings allow each member to bring up to one child to the meeting, with the expectation that the discussion will not feature experiences or language that are inappropriate for the child. Formal childcare may not be available, but the member can watch over her child while participating in the discussion.

Closed: Closed AA meetings in Hawaii are restricted to members of AA and anyone who has a drinking problem and wants to find help. The discussions are informal and everyone is encouraged to participate. Newcomers can benefit from these meetings as they ask questions and learn from members who have been sober for extended periods.

Discussion: In Hawaii, AA discussion meetings allow members to share their opinions and reflections on a particular topic related to alcohol addiction recovery. The leader will typically open the meeting by referencing a relevant AA text, such as the Big Book or Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Then, they will invite others to reflect on the topic in a group discussion.

Men: Select Hawaii AA meetings might be designated only for men impacted by alcohol use disorder. These meetings offer free 12 Step Programs specifically for the health and recovery for men of all ages.

Outdoor Meeting: Select AA chapters may choose to hold meetings outside. These outdoor meetings are usually held in shared community spaces, such as beaches and parks, and can include outdoor activities.

Wheelchair Access: AA meetings in Hawaii may have wheelchair access, including ramps and designated parking. Clients will be able to safely navigate in the facility’s meeting halls, restrooms, and amenities.

Wheelchair-Accessible Bathroom: Selected AA centers offer wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for participants. These bathrooms have enough space for a wheelchair to safely navigate, and can include private stalls with guardrails, reachable toilet paper and seat cover dispensers, a wash basin, and other amenities.
