Chairmen chooses a member to read and open the meeting sharing their experience, strength, and hope for five five-minutes or less on the selected reading. Reading Options for Topic: - 3rd, 7th, or 11th Step Prayer (from the Big Book or other AA Approved Sources) OR - Any AA Approved Literature on the topic of Prayer or Spiritual Experience OR - 24 hour-a-day book (little black book) - Moment of Silence - followed by the Prayer or the Reading (Selected leader will read the prayer) - Read one of the 3rd, 7th, or 11th Step Prayers on the READINGS - Open the meeting - for discussion on the topic!

Types of AA Meetings
Big Book: AA programs in Virginia frequently use the Big Book to inspire participants. The Big Book contains stories about real people who overcame alcohol use disorder.
Discussion: In Virginia, AA discussion meetings are structured around a particular topic that relates to alcohol addiction and recovery. Leaders will typically share first, referencing an AA text such as the Big Book before sharing their personal reflections. Then, other members can talk about what the topic means to them.
Literature: Virginia AA literature meetings are support group meetings for men and women who are affected by alcohol addiction. These cost-free community meetings study the Big Book of AA and other recovery writings by AA founders and leaders as part of a 12-step addiction recovery program.
Meditation: Meditation AA meetings feature physical and emotional calmness as a main method of healing. The meetings open with 15 minutes of private mediation and close with an additional 5 minutes of meditation.
Open: In Virginia, open AA meetings are fully accessible to the public. Members may share their personal experiences with alcohol addiction and recovery while observers can listen and learn. These meetings are informational in nature, welcoming both alcoholics as well as anyone who wants to understand more about the program and its 12 step recovery model.

Young People: AA meetings for young people are intended for members in early adulthood, usually in their late teens and twenties. These groups focus on the experiences and issues that young people may face in their recovery.
