Co-founder Dr. Robert Smith (referred to as “Dr. Bob” in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous) struggled with unsuccessful attempts to abstain from alcohol. Bill Wilson, another AA founder, and Dr. Bob worked together for 30 days after Wilson himself experienced years of failed attempts at staying sober. Wilson tried to get sober by applying principles from Christian-based self-help groups (called the Oxford Group) to his efforts to stop drinking. During a severe relapse, Wilson was hospitalized and had a “spiritual conversion.” He was finally was able to quit drinking. Once Wilson was able to get sober, he began an endeavor to help others suffering from alcohol addiction do the same, but he was often unsuccessful. Soon after, Wilson traveled to Akron, Ohio, and embarked on helping others by working with Dr. Bob to get sober. On June 10 of 1935, Dr. Bob was finally able to stop drinking; this became the official AA anniversary date around the world.
