Types of AA Meetings
Discussion: AA discussion meetings in Louisiana are conversational in nature. Group leaders will begin by sharing a key topic related to alcoholism and recovery, often reading a related passage from an AA text, such as Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. After they share their reflections on the topic, they’ll invite others to participate.
Gay: Gay AA chapters can consist of members who are homosexual men or are simply gay-friendly. Topics in discussion are frequently related to issues facing gay men and their recovery.
LGBTQ: Selected AA chapters focus on providing a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community, and generally welcome LGBTQ+ allies. These groups prioritize members’ recovery and sobriety within a non-heteronormative context.
Lesbian: Lesbian AA meetings are intended as safe spaces for homosexual women and their allies to meet. Discussions generally focus on issues and challenges that lesbians face in their recovery.
Literature: Literature-based AA meetings in Louisiana are peer group meetings for people who are impacted by alcohol addiction. These community support meetings, free for all to attend, emphasize AA literature, such as the Big Book of AA and other writings by AA founders and leaders within a 12-step recovery program.
Open: Open AA meetings in Louisiana are available to anyone who wants to learn more about the program and how its recovery model works. Participants can include individuals seeking treatment for alcohol addiction as well as nonalcoholics interested in the 12 step program.
Wheelchair Access: Louisiana AA meetings with wheelchair access may feature ramps and designated parking spaces. Non-ambulatory clients can safely navigate the center’s meeting spaces and amenities.
