What Makes a Good AA Sponsor?

When you first get sober, it can feel like every decision you make impacts your recovery. And some of them will. That’s why when it comes to choosing your AA sponsor, you don’t just pick the first person you come across. Instead, you pick someone who can give you what you need when you need it.

Here are five qualities to look for in an AA sponsor.

They Have a History of Sponsorship

Sure, everyone has to be a new sponsor once, but that doesn’t mean you need someone who’s still wet behind the ears when it comes to helping you stay sober. You want someone with experience and know how to ensure that you’ve got the right people helping you down the road to recovery.

If you’re ready to get sober, but don’t know where to start, we’re here to assist. Call 800-839-1686 today to talk to a live person about your treatment options and get the help you need.

They’re Active in AA

Good AA Sponsor

A good AA sponsor will be honest and make sure you stay on track.

Sure anyone who’s sober can tell you how to do it, but you want more than someone who’s sober. When it comes to your AA sponsor, you want someone who’s in recovery. To find that, choose someone who is active in AA, has a sponsor of his or her own, and has worked the 12 steps of recovery at least once. Choose someone who is where you want to be and then role model what they do.

They Tell the Truth, Even When It’s Hard

A good sponsor isn’t always your friend. Sometimes, they are the person who has to tell you what no one else wants to tell you. Sometimes they’re the person who has to call you out on your crap and get you to get honest with yourself and others. To do that, your sponsor needs to be someone who isn’t afraid of confrontation and who will do what needs to be done to help you remain in recovery.

They Enjoy Life

You didn’t get sober to be miserable, you were doing a fine job of that while you were addicted, so don’t choose a sponsor who’s stuck in the cycle of hating life and always looking at the negative. Find someone who actually likes the life they are living and has found happiness in recovery. A good sponsor creates solutions to life, not problems.

Is It Okay to Date My AA Sponsor?

They Listen

You need to be able to talk to your sponsor about anything, especially those things that make you uncomfortable. You also want to be able to call your sponsor at 3 in the morning if you need to, so make sure it’s someone who listens and won’t bite your ear off for getting them out of bed just because you’re close to relapsing.
